Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21
Where is your heart? Are you building up earthly treasure rather than treasure in heaven?
You don’t need to have tons of material possessions to be storing up earthly treasure. It’s your attitude towards possessions that determines whether they’re your treasure or not. Whether you own a lot or very little, if you cling to it and worry about it, then it shows that in your heart you hold it as a treasure.
What happens when we hold earthly things as treasures? The verse above from Matthew says that they distract us from what is truly important: building up treasure in heaven. This distraction can come in the form of worry, jealously, greed, or selfishness that can take our focus off of living in a way that’s pleasing to the Lord.
Next month, we’ll look more at building heavenly treasure.

Take a minute to examine the way you view your material possessions. A quick way to gauge this is to ask yourself how you would feel if some, or all, of your belongings were stolen or destroyed. If you have more than you need how do you feel about giving things away and using your belongings to help those who could use it? It’s a good time to do some spring cleaning in your heart and maybe also your closet.
