Do you know what your name means? Do you know why you’re named that?

Many times when the Bible mentions the meaning of a name it tells something about that person. It usually relates to the circumstances of their birth, a reflection of their purpose, or it is an insight into their character. To know the meaning of someone’s name is to know something about them.

Throughout the Bible, God has many names and each one tells us another facet of His character. God revealed Himself to His people progressively throughout the events of the Bible by sharing new names as seen in Exodus 6:2-3: “God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them.” Each time they learned a new name of God, the people learned something new about who He is.

God’s many names reveal to us that He is mighty, all powerful, over everything, near to us, our comforter, our salvation, holy, alive, worthy of our praise, and creator, just to name a few. When you learn the meanings of the names of God, they paint a picture of His character as He reveals Himself through scripture.
