Every summer, thousands of children and teenagers head off to Christian camp, and every summer, God does remarkable things in those few short days. Friendships form. Fears are faced. And many young people meet Jesus for the very first time around a campfire or in a quiet cabin conversation. None of that happens by accident. It happens because people pray.
At the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center, we’ve seen firsthand how prayer shapes a camp week. Below you’ll find prayers for campers, counselors, staff, and the parents who send their kids to us, plus practical guidance on how to pray for camp and the Bible verses we love to pray over every session. How to pray for camp
You don’t need special words to pray for camp, you just need a willing heart. Still, it helps to pray with focus. We encourage praying for four things all week long:
Safety. Camp is full of activity: swimming, climbing, hiking, travel to and from home. Ask God to protect every camper and staff member, body and mind.
Faith. The real purpose of Christian camp is that campers would encounter God. Pray that hearts would be open, that the gospel would be clear, and that seeds planted this week would grow for a lifetime.
Relationships. Pray for genuine friendships between campers, and for trust between campers and their counselors, the kind of trust that lets a child ask a hard question about God.
Courage. First-time campers, homesick kids, and shy children all need bravery. Ask God to replace fear with confidence and loneliness with belonging.
A simple pattern is to pray by name and by need: name a specific camper, counselor, or session, then bring a specific need before God. Praying this way, rather than in generalities, keeps your prayers personal and expectant.
A prayer for the whole camp season
Pray this over the summer as a whole, at the start of the season, or as a church before your kids leave.
Heavenly Father, we lift up this entire camp season to You. Thank You for every child who will walk through the gates and every leader who will welcome them. We ask that this would be a summer of transformation, that campers would leave knowing You more, trusting You more, and loving You more than when they arrived.
Guard this place. Guard these people. Let Your presence fill every cabin, every trail, every worship service, and every quiet conversation. Where there is doubt, bring faith; where there is fear, bring peace; where there is loneliness, bring belonging. May Your name be lifted high all summer long. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers for the campers
A prayer for a camper’s safety and health
Lord, You are our protector. Watch over every camper this week, on the water, on the trails, and everywhere they go. Keep their bodies strong and healthy, guard them from harm and from illness, and let them return home safe and full of good memories. We trust them to Your care. Amen.
Psalm 91:11: “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”
A prayer for a camper’s faith and salvation
Father, more than anything, we long for these campers to know Jesus. Open their hearts to the gospel. For those who already believe, deepen their faith and give them courage to live it out. For those who do not yet know You, draw them by Your Holy Spirit and let this be the week they say yes to Christ. Let camp be holy ground. Amen.

A prayer for friendship and belonging
Lord Jesus, You know how much a good friend matters to a child. Give each camper someone to sit with, laugh with, and grow with this week. Break down cliques and loneliness. Help every camper feel seen, welcomed, and known, just as You see and know each of them. Amen.
A prayer for a homesick or first-time camper
Gentle Shepherd, be near to the camper whose heart aches for home tonight. Wrap them in Your peace. Remind them that You are with them even here, even now, and that they are never truly alone. Turn their homesickness into a story of courage they’ll tell for years. Give their parents peace too. Amen.

A prayer for campers to grow and be challenged
God of growth, stretch these campers this week. Give them the courage to try the hard climb, to ask the honest question, to challenge themselves in body and in faith. When they stumble, teach them. When they succeed, keep them humble. Let them go home a little braver and a lot closer to You. Amen.
Prayers for counselors & staff
Camp staff pour themselves out for a week (or a whole summer). They carry more than most people realize. Here’s how to cover them in prayer.
A prayer for the physical stamina of camp staff
Lord, camp is a marathon, not a sprint. Give our counselors and staff physical health, deep rest at night, and endurance for long, hot, joyful days. When their energy runs low, be their strength. Sustain their bodies so they can serve with their whole hearts. Amen.

A prayer for wisdom and the right words
Father, our counselors will face moments they don’t feel ready for, a hard question, a hurting camper, a conflict in the cabin. Give them wisdom beyond their years and the right words at the right time. When they don’t know how to respond, help them pause, pray, and trust You to lead. Amen.
A prayer that God’s strength would carry them
Lord, remind our staff that this work is Yours, not theirs. Take the pressure off their shoulders. Let them serve out of Your power and not their own effort, so they finish this week empty of self but full of You. May campers see Jesus in them. Amen.

A prayer for joy that draws campers in
God, fill our counselors with genuine joy, the kind that’s contagious, the kind that makes a camper lean in and want what they have. Give them excitement about Your Word and delight in the campers You’ve entrusted to them. Let their joy point straight back to You. Amen.
A prayer for unity and protection among the team
Lord, knit this staff together. Guard them from division, exhaustion, and discouragement. Protect their own walk with You while they pour into others, and surround them with the encouragement they need. Make them a team that loves like family and serves like Jesus. Amen.
Prayers for parents sending a child to camp
Drop-off can be as hard for the parent as it is for the child. These prayers are for you.

Heavenly Father, today I place my child in Your hands and in the care of the people at this camp. Thank You that You love them even more than I do. Keep them safe, help them make good friends, and let them feel Your presence in a new and real way this week. Calm my worries and help me trust You with the child You gave me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
