What is Kaleidoscope Camp?

Kaleidoscope Camp is a ministry of Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center located just outside of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The 300 plus acre retreat center was founded by the Mennonite Churches in the Eastern District of the Virginia Mennonite Conference. They had a vision of providing a place where children could come to know Jesus Christ and grow in their relationship with the Lord. Kaleidoscope Camp is an interdenominational camp serving children from Richmond, Williamsburg, and the Hampton Roads area.

Kaleidoscope camp runs for six weeks of the summer. We have four full week camps as well as two half week mini camps. We run camps for children ages seven to sixteen. Each camp is designed with fun, age appropriate activities, interactive bible studies, and inspiring worship and speakers. Our campers range from children who have grown up in a church family to campers who do not have a home church.

The goal of Kaleidoscope Camp is to demonstrate God’s love to young people by inviting them to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ, helping them develop a solid foundation in God’s Word, and challenging them to be salt and light in a world that is full of darkness. We accomplish this through meaningful worship and Bible studies as well as fun activities. The role of the camp counselor is critical to the growth and nurturing of campers’ faith. The camp day is filled with fun activities that children typically are not able to do at home.

Can I bring my family?

Yes. We enjoy having both the nurse as well as their family at camp. We provide lodging for the Nurse and their family as well as meals for the entire week.

What activities or facilities are available for my family during the week?

We have a lot of activities available: volleyball, tennis, basketball, softball, Frisbee golf, horseshoes, tetherball, playgrounds. We also have a swimming pool and a number of hiking trails.

Can my children participate in camp activities?

If your child is a camper that week they will stay in a cabin. They will go to activities with their counselors. If your child is not a camper that week we ask that they not participate in activities. We want to keep camp a special experience that you get to participate in when you come as a camper. Having staff kids “drop” in and out of activities is very disruptive to the cabin groups at those activities and undermines the experience of camp as a camper.

Do I have to use my free week of camp for my own child or can it be applied to another child?

The free week of camp can be used by any child of the Nurse’s choosing.

Does my child have to attend camp the week I am a nurse?

No. Some children like to be a camper when their parent is the nurse and other children want to be a camper when their parent is not present. The free week of camp applies to any week and is not constrained to when the Nurse sending them is there.

Can I send more than one child to camp?

Yes. We give a 50% discount to additional nurse’s children who wish to attend camp.

How do I apply?

Take some time to read through all the information and job descriptions before applying so that you are aware of the job responsibilities.

Spend some time praying about where God would have you work this summer. Pray for discernment.

You can download an application here, or contact Jenn Hill by phone (757)566-2256 or email programs@wcrc.info to have an application mailed to you.

Once you have completed the application, simply mail it to the address below and hand out your reference forms. Please have your references send the completed form to the address below as well.

Once we receive your application and references you will be called to set up an interview. The interview is a discerning process. Together we will discern if camp is the place that the Lord would like to use you this summer. A number of factors will play into this process including camper enrollment as well as your summer availability and qualifications.
